A distant friend recently asked me how I knew for certain that I wanted to be a birth doula. "I couldn't not pursue this," I told her, "it wasn't an option." Finding this profession feels like a gift. I've found my passion. As a doula you support expecting parents during one of life's greatest rites of passage and join them in witnessing the miracle of birth. Who wouldn't want this job?

My story begins when I became pregnant with my daughter Lily. From the very beginning I read everything I could get my hands on about birth. Through this time of research and self discovery, I became passionate about birth. I've learned so much - from the physical & emotional process of birth, to how birth experiences have changed in the past 50 years. I've seen how each woman and partner has unique needs and desires for their labor and birth. I hired an incredible doula for my own birth and truly couldn't have had the birth I wanted without her support. Lily's birth was beautiful and I felt proud. In March 2009 I attended my birth doula training and then was hired by my first client one month later.

How could I not try to give this gift to other women & their partners? The gift of support during labor. Labor is an unpredictable event that cannot be planned. To have a knowledgeable woman never leave your side for the duration of your experience is comforting. Your questions are answered, you feel safe, you have calm reassurance that allows you to relax, to open, to breathe...
